3 Simple Ways to Prioritise Yourself First As A Mum Without Feeling Guilty

  Reading time 7 minutes

Being a mum is in my experience a beautiful and rewarding experience, but it can also be overwhelming and demanding. With so many responsibilities to juggle, it’s easy for moms to put their own needs last. However, it’s important to remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish—it is essential for your own wellbeing.

Prioritising your well-being will not only benefit you but also your family. Here are three simple ways that I have personally implemented to prioritise yourself first as a mom without feeling guilty.

ps: I could make this blog post much much longer and add SOOOOO many things into this post, however I felt that these 3 things are honestly VERY achievable, even on a budget, and even if you are parenting solo.

Schedule Time for Yourself in Your Calendar

As a busy mum, it’s important to carve out dedicated time for yourself. One effective way to ensure this happens is by scheduling it in your calendar. Treat your personal time as a non-negotiable appointment that you can’t cancel.

Whether it’s an hour in the morning for self-reflection, an afternoon for pursuing a hobby, or an evening for relaxing with a book, mark it in your calendar and commit to it.

By scheduling time for yourself, you’re sending a clear message that your needs matter. It helps create a sense of structure and routine, making it easier for you to prioritise yourself without feeling guilty.

Remember, you deserve time to recharge and nurture your own well-being, just as much as anyone else.

Exercise and Take Your Vitamins and Supplements

Remember exercising does not have to happen in the gym – I prefer exercising in the house where my little one is exposed to seeing me get active.

Physical health is crucial for your overall well-being as a mum. Regular exercise not only keeps your body fit but also releases endorphins that boost your mood and energy levels. Find activities that you enjoy and can easily incorporate into your routine, whether it’s going for a walk, practicing yoga at home, or joining a fitness class.

In addition to exercise, make sure you’re taking care of your nutritional needs. I know how challenging it is to get all the nutrients your body requires, so make sure you don’t forget to take your daily multi vitamin tablets.

Prioritising your physical health will help you feel energised, stronger, and better equipped to handle the demands of motherhood.

Invest in Yourself

Investing in yourself is a powerful way to prioritise your personal growth and well-being. It’s easy to get caught up in the role of being a mum and forget about your own dreams, passions, and interests. Take the time to reflect on what makes you happy and fulfilled outside of your role as a mother.

Consider pursuing further education or learning new skills. This could be enrolling in an online course, attending workshops or seminars, or joining a local community group related to your interests. Invest in activities that bring you joy, whether it’s painting, writing, gardening, or playing a musical instrument.

Investing in yourself not only helps you grow as an individual but also sets a positive example for your children. Show them that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and that personal growth is a lifelong journey.

By investing in yourself, you’ll feel a renewed sense of purpose, fulfilment, and confidence, which will positively impact your role as a mom.

Why You Feel Guilty Spending Time on Yourself

  1. Societal Expectations: Society often places a significant emphasis on the role of mothers as caregivers and nurturers. There is an underlying expectation that mothers should prioritise their children’s needs and well-being above their own. Deviating from this norm can lead to feelings of guilt, as moms may feel like they are not fulfilling their responsibilities adequately.
  2. Cultural and Family Pressures: Cultural and family values can also contribute to the guilt moms feel. In some cultures or families, there may be specific expectations regarding self-sacrifice and putting others’ needs before one’s own. This can create internal conflicts when mothers attempt to prioritize themselves, as they may worry about disappointing or neglecting their family or community.
  3. Unrealistic Standards: Moms often place high expectations on themselves, striving for perfection in their roles as caregivers. They may feel guilty if they believe they are not meeting these self-imposed standards when taking time for themselves. This pressure to excel in every aspect of motherhood can lead to feelings of guilt or self-doubt when prioritizing personal needs.
  4. Fear of Judgment: Moms may fear judgment from others, including friends, family members, or even strangers, when they prioritize themselves. They may worry that others will perceive them as selfish or neglectful mothers, further contributing to the guilt they experience.
  5. Lack of Self-Validation: Some moms rely heavily on external validation for their sense of worth and accomplishment. When they prioritize themselves, they might struggle to validate their choices and may feel guilty because they are not receiving the same validation from others.

It’s important to note that self-care and self-prioritisation are essential for maintaining one’s well-being and overall happiness, allowing moms to recharge and be more present for their families. Overcoming the guilt associated with self-care involves challenging societal norms, setting realistic expectations, and recognising that taking care of oneself is not only acceptable but also beneficial for both the mother and her family.
